After baseless allegations of a “stolen” 2020 election by Trump and his allies, our freedom to vote has been under siege in 2021. You know this. We know this. The whole world knows this! So then imagine our surprise when we learned the Biden administration is hosting a global summit on democracy today, positioning ourselves as the standard bearer for the world.
We cannot lecture other nations about democracy until we get our own house in order. From state legislatures drawing partisan and unfair congressional maps to a dramatic rollback of voting access in state after state that disproportionately hurts voters of color, conservatives have pulled every trick in the book to restrict access to the ballot box.
And we want to be the leaders of the free world?
While our freedom to vote remains under attack, President Biden has yet to clearly embrace the solution: supporting an end to the filibuster so we can pass sweeping voting rights legislation that’s been idling in the Senate.
We can’t defend democracy abroad with a straight face without defending democracy at home. If you’re frustrated, take this opportunity to tweet directly at POTUS. It’s an easy way to get the president and the public’s attention on this crucial issue that’s grinding all of our gears.

Since he took office, President Biden has spoken to the sorry state our democracy’s in, saying “we’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War.” We couldn’t agree more! This year alone, we saw 19 states pass 33 laws, making it more difficult for Americans across the country to vote.
But we’re now a year into President Biden’s term and he has yet to deliver on voting rights and protecting our democracy.
Meanwhile, for the first time ever, the United States was recently on a list of “backsliding democracies,” which pointed to the spread of disinformation, baseless allegations of electoral fraud, an erosion of civil liberties, and voter suppression efforts that disproportionately hurt voters of color.
The world is watching. A year’s worth of press conferences, speeches, and Zoom calls don’t add up to much when our voting rights are being eroded. We need to remind Biden that we elected him to make good on the promises he made to the American people. And the best way to do that is publicly—on social media or in your local paper.
Make your voice heard. Tweet at President Biden today.
