Next week, eligible families will receive the final round of the expanded tax cuts for families with children, provided through the American Rescue Plan. As the holiday season approaches, the tax cuts mean families will have more money to afford holiday gifts, gas to travel to family members, and food to put on the table. The Senate must pass the House-passed Build Back Better Act, which will extend these tax cuts for one year. Since families began receiving the tax cuts in July, researchers found it lifted 3 million children out of poverty. In my district, these tax cuts delivered close to $97 million in tax cuts for working families.

In other news, the House is voting this week on the Protecting Our Democracy Act, a sweeping package of historically bipartisan reforms to restore checks and balances, strengthen accountability and transparency, and protect America’s elections from foreign interference. I’m pleased my legislation to strengthen the independence and integrity of the federal government’s inspectors general was included in the package. We must ensure our inspectors general are nonpartisan so they can do their jobs effectively. The former President made numerous attempts at undermining our system of government and our democracy. We cannot allow that to happen again.

COVID-19 Updates

The LA County Department of Public Health continues to closely monitor the spread of the Omicron variant in Los Angeles County. This week, Dr. Anthony Fauci expressed that preliminary data about the severity of Omicron is encouraging, however more data is needed to draw conclusions. Vaccinations and booster shots remain critical to protecting yourself and others from COVID-19. The CDC is recommending booster shots for all eligible adults. In addition, to prevent the spread, all international travelers must have a negative COVID test taken within one day of boarding a plane to the U.S., regardless of vaccination status and nationality. For more information, please visit TravelSafeLACounty.com.
