Hi Revealer,

As a nonprofit investigative newsroom, our bottom line is the public interest. We have the courage, freedom and independence to dedicate our entire team to this work because we’re powered by support from foundations, individual donors, and readers and listeners like you.

We're grateful that you trust our reporting – during an era of unprecedented disinformation –  and that you value the impact we have on democracy.
And we need your continued support today.
At Reveal, we pour the necessary time and resources into unearthing original stories that hold people and institutions accountable for the problems they’ve caused or benefited from.

In October, we released When Abusers Keep Their Guns, a major investigation into why domestic abusers and felons are allowed to keep weapons – which have been used to kill intimate partners at alarming rates – despite a federal law banning it. Astonishingly, the federal government doesn’t track comprehensive real-time data on the number of domestic violence homicides. Our reporter Jennifer Gollan hand-built a database tracking these cases and interviewed the interim head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to understand these failings.

We showcased our investigation on all our platforms – our radio show and podcast; a digital piece also published on The Guardian’s site; and “Unrelinquished”, a 30-minute documentary co-produced with Al Jazeera English’s “Fault Lines.”

I’m excited to share that the investigation is already creating impact. The White House lead on domestic violence issues for the Gender Policy Council reviewed our stories and data and said, “It will be helpful as we continue to analyze opportunities to improve policies and protections.”

Jennifer was also part of a screening of “Unrelinquished” for members of Congress and their staff. Additionally, TV host Jon Stewart cited our investigation as an essential story to understanding the link between gun violence and domestic abuse. And we’ve been sharing the findings with key nonprofit organizations that work in this space as part of an educational campaign.

This robust multiplatform approach to highlighting this important issue wouldn’t be possible at most other news organizations. Jennifer was able to take eight months to build the database and understand the scope of the problem, consulting a diverse set of experts and jurists well versed in this area of law. She and our producer Katharine Mieszkowski crisscrossed the country interviewing families and were able to tap into the expertise of our data and engagement teams to continue this groundbreaking reporting.

None of this would have happened without our dogged, compassionate reporting. And your support is what makes it all possible.
Please donate today. Until Dec. 31, if you donate at least $9 a month, we’ll send you a Reveal keychain as a small way of showing our appreciation.

We are deeply thankful for our members in these harrowing times. Accurate, fact-based journalism is needed now more than ever, and your support makes it all possible.

Thank you,
