As the end of the year approaches, we like to remember and celebrate the wins we had in 2021 for the diabetes community. Here’s just some of what we accomplished this year: Advocacy Our incredible advocacy team worked with Medicare to permanently eliminate the requirement to check your blood glucose (blood sugar) four times a day in order to qualify for continuous glucose monitor coverage. This removes a huge accessibility barrier for people with diabetes to use lifesaving diabetes technology! Research and Care We welcomed over 11,500 scientists, clinicians, doctors, nurses, and other diabetes care providers to this year’s virtual 81st Scientific Sessions. The latest in groundbreaking research is presented at this meeting every year to keep health care providers up to date on the latest diabetes research, management, and care techniques. Topics ranging from new medications and their impact on heart disease and clinical trial results were discussed at the meeting. Community For the second year in a row, Imagine Camp was held virtually to keep our campers, staff, and volunteers safe. Fun was certainly not cancelled this summer, we hosted over 1,700 campers from their comfort of their own homes (spanning 17 countries!)—all at no cost to them! Weekly Zoom cabin meetings plus an Activity Box and Activity Journal ensured everyone was connected and having a blast all while safely learning independent diabetes management. We couldn’t have done any of it without you! Thank you for your support of the American Diabetes Association® and the over 122 million Americans living with diabetes and prediabetes—you help millions thrive. |
