Friend,

A few weeks ago, the conservative majority in the Supreme Court refused to strike down extreme partisan gerrymandered congressional maps, refusing to do anything to restrict gerrymandering that undermines our democracy.

In a 5-4 decision, SCOTUS found that federal courts cannot weigh in on whether partisan gerrymandering violates the Constitution. It’s a terrible outcome, and a major setback in the fight for fair seats.

What does that mean for future elections? Well, it means Republicans will continue their efforts to draw electoral maps to engineer victory regardless of the desires of the electorate. At the end of the day, they represent a diminishing segment of the population and need to choose their own voters or they lose.

But allowing representatives to choose their own voters instead of the other way around, is not how democracy is supposed to work, friend, and it compromises free and fair elections in favor of a single party’s desire to stay in power. If we don’t do something, Republicans will try to consolidate these wins after the 2020 census, locking much of the country into unfair maps for another decade.

This is exactly why I and the rest of the House Democratic Majority made voting rights our very first priority in 2019, passing the For the People Act to stop this kind of extreme partisan redistricting, reduce corruption and the influence of dark money, and strengthen protections for voters. But of course, Mitch McConnell has blocked it from a vote.

The Supreme Court has punted on this critical issue, but that just means our fight has to move to the states. I’m asking you to chip in to help us fight for redistricting reform and fair districts.

President Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder is leading the National Redistricting Democratic Committee, and they’re targeting key elections in the states and going to court in the fight for fair seats. If we’re going to have fair maps in 2020 and beyond, it’s crucial we invest now and win down-ballot races. Will you help us do that by splitting a contribution of $5 or more to our campaign and the committee right now?
