The New York Times:
"Justice Dept. Files Voting Rights Suit Against Texas Over New Map" |
This is HUGE, John! The Department of Justice has filed its first lawsuit of the 2021 redistricting cycle, taking on Texas' gerrymandered maps. According to The Times, the Justice Department is arguing that those maps "would essentially make ballots cast by Black and Latino voters count for less than those of others."
This is exactly the NDRC's position, and why we've been working so hard to end gerrymandering in Texas. Real quick -- will you help us build on this exciting momentum by rushing an immediate donation to support our work across the country?
"Attorney General Merrick Garland’s announcement on Monday marked the Biden administration’s first major legal action on redistricting."
-- The Washington Post
"The DOJ’s lawsuit is a tremendous step in the fight to hold Texas Republicans accountable and return power back to the people -- where it belongs."
-- Former A.G. Eric H. Holder, Jr. |
Attorney General Garland's announcement was a critical step in the fight against gerrymandering, and he restated on Monday that the Justice Department would "use all available authorities and resources to continue protecting the right to vote."
This is great news for our fight against manipulated maps, but it's not going to be enough on its own. Lawsuits take time; the best thing we can do is fight NOW, on the ground, in the states that are still drawing their maps.
And that means we need to ask you for help, John: Will you rush an immediate donation to help us do everything we can to protect fair maps and the right to vote?
