Last week, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar was the target of a blatant, bigoted Islamophobic attack from Republican Representative Lauren Boebert.
What’s worse? It’s clear that this attack wasn’t an isolated incident. For a Member of Congress to repeatedly use hateful, anti-Muslim rhetoric and Islamophobic tropes to describe a Muslim colleague is both abhorrent and dangerous. It contributes to increasing hatred and bigotry, and has no place in Congress or in our society.
That’s why Ayanna is now leading the effort to hold Congresswoman Boebert accountable by removing her from her committee assignments:
“Without meaningful accountability for that Member’s actions, we risk normalizing this behavior and endangering the lives of our Muslim colleagues, Muslim staffers and every Muslim who calls America home.
The House must unequivocally condemn this incendiary rhetoric. How we respond in moments like these will have lasting impacts, and history will remember us for it.”
Enough is enough. In Ilhan’s words, “condemning this should not be a partisan issue. This is about our basic humanity, and the fundamental right to religion enshrined in our constitution.”
Words have consequences and there must be accountability.
