On Monday, the Justice Department sued Texas over the state’s proposed redistricting maps, in part because it “denies Black and Latino voters the equal opportunity to participate in the election process.”
It’s not a coincidence that Republican-controlled legislatures across the country are gerrymandering districts to tilt the electoral balance in their favor. After all, record-breaking turnout in 2020 lost them the Senate and the White House, and the GOP winning back the House in 2022 would immediately block all legislative progress.
But there is action we can take right now in the Senate to protect the right to vote and make sure everyone’s voice is heard.
That’s why I co-sponsored the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would end racial gerrymandering in redistricting maps like the one proposed by the state of Texas. But even with our slim Democratic majority, Republicans have blocked every effort to pass this bill by using the filibuster.
Add your name next to mine, and sign my petition urging the Senate to eliminate the filibuster, so we can pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and put an end to discriminatory redistricting maps.
I am committed to protecting and expanding voting rights across the country, to ensure that everyone has their voice heard at the ballot box, and I will not stop until we get this to President Biden's desk. Thank you for your support.
