Did you see this new Associated Press report about the GOP’s strategy to target Latinos with misinformation? This is a big red flag for us here in the Valley and we want to share why. (Ok, here goes a deep dive into misinformation tactics, stick with us…)

As you know, the Valley is incredibly diverse: Latinos make up over 40% of our community, including 10,000 Dreamers. Josh has made listening to our Latino community a top priority – in fact, one of our first hires was our Latino Constituency Director (thanks to your help!).

 

However, Republicans see an opportunity. According to the AP, the GOP is waging an aggressive misinformation campaign to turn Latinos against Josh and Democrats. All this is happening online, in Spanish, and under the radar of Facebook’s oversight. The ads range from asserting President Biden is a communist (a salient hit for parts of our Latino community) to pushing false voter fraud conspiracy theories. 

 

And Facebook barely notices – misinformation in Spanish is only caught 29% of the time, compared to 70% of the time when it’s in English. The GOP has free reign to lie online with little to no consequences. 

 





John, it’s clear that social media platforms aren’t prepared to deal with the slew of Spanish-language disinformation out there. In fact, an internal Facebook memo admitted that the website’s ability to detect disinformation is “basically non-existent” in non-English comments. And meanwhile, Google is estimated to make nearly $6 million off of ads targeted to websites that peddled this COVID-19 disinformation in Spanish this year. 

This misinformation is extremely dangerous not only to Democrats, but literally to our democracy. Here on Team Harder, we’re passionate about uplifting Latino voices and these misinformation tactics are at the core of what is wrong with politics. We’re confident that our Latino organizing program (both online and offline) can be successful, but we need your help keeping it funded.
