John, Even today, despite multiple investigations, critical information about the money spent in the 2016 election is still unknown. How much did the Russian Federation spend? When and for which efforts did it make the payments? How much (and which) of that spending was ‘coordinated' with the Trump campaign? Answering these questions is the FEC’s job, and they’ve sat on it for almost five years. That’s why Free Speech For People and Campaign for Accountability filed a federal lawsuit today against the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for failing to respond to our request for an investigation of the Russian government’s political spending in 2016 and coordination with former President Trump’s 2016 campaign. (“Coordination” is a technical term in federal campaign finance law--it’s broader than “conspiracy” and wasn’t part of the Mueller investigation.) Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter: We need answers from the FEC. Because the FEC still has not responded to our initial 2016 complaint after nearly five years, it acted contrary to the law and deprived the American public of vital information regarding campaign financing in 2016 and potential use of online platforms to corrupt our democracy. Make no mistake: the Russian government helped Trump get elected. A foreign power paid for computer hacks, social media posts, and paid political ads that influenced our democratic elections in violation of federal law. Trump welcomed and invited this illegal spending--the hallmarks of coordination under federal campaign finance law. But we still don’t have the full picture because the FEC has not responded to our complaint. Free Speech For People is doing everything in its power to learn the truth of what happened in 2016 and ensure that former President Trump and his campaign are held accountable for violations of election law. That starts with getting the answers we need and deserve from the FEC. In solidarity, Ron Fein Legal Director, Free Speech For People |
