The Maine Republican Party just announced their proposed 2022 platform and it’s a direct attack on LGBTQ+ Mainers around the state.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a surprise. Paul LePage and the Maine GOP have a long history of pursuing dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ policies. In 2018, LePage vetoed a bipartisan bill banning conversion therapy in Maine, making history as the only governor in the country to refuse to protect LGBTQ+ children at the time.

As the first openly gay Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, I feel a personal responsibility to do everything I can to stand up to this hateful platform and fight for the LGBTQ+ community across the state.

While Maine Republicans are trying to ban transgender student atheletes, M aine Democrats are ready to protect LGBTQ+ students and children in Maine. Thanks to Governor Mills and my fellow Democratic colleagues, we finally eliminated conversion therapy in 2019. But we still have more work to do.
