In 2007, my brother was shot and my family’s lives were forever changed.
We were some of the lucky ones — my brother survived. But this outcome doesn't happen for everyone. From school shootings to street violence, it's clear that we have a serious gun violence epidemic in this country — and it is unacceptable that so many families experience tragedies like mine, or worse, every day.
Yet, Congress' hands remain tied on research because of the 1996 Dickey Amendment, which bans the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) from conducting public health studies on gun violence.
We've got to do better. Research on gun violence is long overdue.

Entire communities are being ripped apart by this national crisis, all while Trump’s administration and his allies in Congress are turning a blind eye to addressing the crisis of school shootings — we need action NOW. The CDC and the NIH need critical funding to better understand how we can save lives and keep our communities safe from the scourge of gun violence.
