China Upset U.S. Planning Diplomatic Boycott of Olympics in Beijing

From the not-so-veiled threat of Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian: “The U.S. should stop politicizing sports and hyping up the so-called ‘diplomatic boycott’ so as not to affect China-US dialogue and cooperation in important areas” (Washington Examiner). From Rich Lowry: It should be a rule of thumb that the Olympic games shouldn’t be held in countries that operate concentration camps. If this strikes you as an unreasonable demand, you aren’t suited to serve on the International Olympic Committee. The IOC has doggedly defended Beijing as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics even as the Chinese Communist Party pursues its campaign of unrelenting barbarity against the Uyghurs (National Review). Meanwhile, Apple signed a $275 billion deal with China to “placate” them, according to the story (Reuters). From Hugh Hewitt: To do so on the eve of the Genocide Games is, at best, a terrible look (Twitter).

Pro-Life Community Reacts to New York Times Article Claiming Children are Better Dead than Adopted

The New York Times posted a “guest essay” from a “Democratic digital strategist” who argues it’s better to kill a child in the womb than put it up for adoption (New York Times). From Dr. Albert Mohler: The analysis is simply stunning. The argument here is that adoption is a worse alternative for women because it is emotionally fraud, and after all, you do have the ideological issues that the there’s a power. There is an inversion of power and privilege here. Now, interestingly, she reconnected with her birth mother and here’s what she tells us that both her birth mother and her adoptive mother, “oppose abortion on religious grounds.” Now, let’s just stop for a moment. That goes a long way in explaining how the author of this article has even come to life and then grew to adulthood and was cared and nurtured in such a way that she could eventually become a Democratic digital strategist and proponent of abortion. If the abortion logic had prevailed with her birth mother, she would never have existed. But this author is actually infuriated that anyone would make that argument, including, stunningly enough, her birth mother and her adoptive mother (Briefing). From Kevin Williamson: There are millions of adopted Americans. I’m one of them, and we did not get together and elect Elizabeth Spiers to speak on our behalf. If we were looking for a representative, I am sure that we could do better. Later: It is interesting that it never seems to occur to sophists such as Spiers that the suffering of women who relinquish their children for adoption is evidence for the pro-life position. Why do they suffer? Because they are not ignorant. Mothers understand motherhood. No one has to explain to these mothers (the “biological” is an unnecessary decoration) that they owe some moral obligation to their children… The connection mothers feel to their children isn’t an opinion that is imposed on them by some third party — that connection is a fact, part of the real world, not a subjective preference. As Spiers writes, some adoptions work out very well, and some work our badly. (In that, adoptive families are a lot like non-adoptive families.) But the act of adoption is never morally neutral, neither for the parents who are relinquishing their child nor for the adoptive parents. The reason this transaction is morally significant is that the child is morally significant per se. That significance is the significance attached to every human individual — it is not the mother’s gift to give or to withhold (National Review).

Surgeon General Warns of Youth Mental Health Crisis

Which was bad before and amplified in this pandemic madness (NPR). From Karol Markowicz: We can go to concerts, dinner, Broadway shows. But being in the same room as the population least at risk for a poor COVID-19 outcome is forbidden. It’s because our leaders have decided that concerts, dinners, Broadway shows matter while parental involvement in kids’ education just doesn’t. They pretend there are no consequences to this. There are (NY Post).

Smollett Upset with N-Word as Prosecutor Reads from Smollett’s Text Messages

From the story: Former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett asked Special Prosecutor Dan Webb to stop reading the N-word out loud during the court hearing as the attorney read Smollett’s own messages aloud as evidence. The exchange took place during the sixth day of the controversial trial involving Smollett. He is facing six counts regarding allegations he staged a hate crime against himself in 2019 and claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic incident (Daily Wire). From Larry Elder: Notice the anti “white supremacy” and “judicial systemic racism” complainers have gone radio silence over the fact that the #JussieSmollet jury has but one black. It’s because even @TheRevAl knows he’s lying. So the racial composition of the jury is irrelevant (Twitter).
