Dear Evidence Action Supporter,

This year, one of the biggest successes for our Deworm the World Initiative has been helping the government of Pakistan further scale its school-based deworming program to target over 10 million children. This represents significant growth from the 2.9 million children we first helped deworm in 2019.

The expansion required enormous work, as Pakistan has the world’s second-highest number of out-of-school children—approximately 30% of children do not attend school in the territories and provinces where we support deworming. In addition, significant numbers of children are enrolled in private schools and madrassas (religious schools), which are difficult to access through centralized government systems. This means many children both in and out of school are hard to reach, and we had to get creative.

In Sindh province, where we supported deworming in early November, approximately 80% of children are considered ‘hard to reach’. To address this challenge, we worked with our government partners and our implementing partner Interactive Research & Development (IRD) Pakistan, to devise alternative delivery methods that can supplement school-based deworming. We aligned on leveraging health workers, which have been used across other health campaigns such as polio and typhoid vaccination, to conduct the campaign in schools and households.

We are currently testing this approach. If it works, we will likely replicate it in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, where approximately 38% and 57% of children are out of school, respectively. Above all, we remain committed to testing cost-effective delivery methods so that all at-risk children in Pakistan can access deworming treatment, ensuring this generation of children will have better health, education, and long-term wellbeing.

No child at risk of worm infection should be left behind. With your support, we can make regular treatment a reality.
