Dear John,
When I reflect back on this year, two days in January keep sticking out in my mind.
2021 started with WFP members in Georgia getting out the vote to win two US Senate run-offs on January 5th, giving Democrats unified control of Congress, by the slimmest possible margin.
The very next day, Donald Trump instigated a mob, some carrying Confederate flags, to storm the Capitol in the hope of nullifying the votes of 81 million Americans. A majority of Republicans in Congress voted that night to overturn the election.
We’ve lived through a tumultuous year of school closures, inflation, gigantic strikes and emotional court verdicts, all dominating headlines. And through a second year of a pandemic in which more Americans died than the first.
But the shape of this year was defined on those two days in January. We won razor-thin Democratic majorities in Congress — majorities that have struggled to govern because of a small number of corporate Democrats and an increasingly authoritarian right wing that dominates the Republican Party and threatens our democracy.
What this proves is that while we may have Democratic majorities in Congress and some states, we do not yet have Working Families majorities. It’s our mission to change that.
That’s why, this week, we are holding WFP’s Annual Party Building Drive. And it’s why I’m asking you, John, if you will join me and thousands of amazing people nationwide as a proud dues-paying member of WFP by committing to a monthly contribution through 2022 and beyond.
If you believe in the power of the people, you’re in the right place. Building WFP is a radical act of imagination.
Now imagine winning in 2022 — imagine winning Working Families majorities in Congress and across statehouses. Imagine winning the governing power to pass paid family leave and make life-saving prescription drugs cheaper. To protect workers’ rights and the right to an abortion. To save our democracy and our climate.
Imagine a government where working people call the shots.
There will always be midterm headwinds. There will also always be incredible opportunities to elect working people up and down the ballot who will deliver for us.
Now imagine for just a moment how we get there. The answer is you. The answer is all of us.
As long as we still have a democracy, the answer is, and the answer will always be, organized people. It’s the only way to beat organized money.
If you’re not a member, this is your invitation to join. If you are, this is your invitation to deepen your commitment. Up your dues or up your skills. Bring your family and friends into the movement.
Our party is ordinary people coming together to do extraordinary things. Our party is the political home we’re building together. We’re building it for the people we love — for each other.
The WFP is my political home because I want a nation rooted in justice and dignity for all. But if you’re waiting for me or anyone else to make it happen, you’ll be waiting a long time. This is our future to build together, if we all do our share.
Our team has set a goal of signing up 750 members before our Party Building Drive ends on December 16th. Will you be one of them? Please join me as a WFP member by signing up with a monthly contribution of $10 or more.
In love and radical solidarity,
Maurice
