We have an election on Tuesday, and we have a chance to bring an important election reform to New York City!
Ranked Choice Voting, which has been endorsed by The New York Times, The Daily News, Crain's New York, and many progressive organizations, is on the ballot. By voting YES on Ballot Question 1 on Election Day, November 5th, we can take strides to improve our elections.
So, how does it work?
Most of our primary and special elections produce winners with less than 50% of the vote. This means that many of our elected officials win their primaries — which virtually guarantees their election in November — without majority support from voters in their districts. That’s not democratic representation.
If we vote yes on 1 and Ranked Choice Voting goes into effect in the city, it would mean a candidate who collects a majority of the vote wins.
Ballots will be counted in rounds, where last-place candidates would be eliminated from the race and the voters’ next choices would be counted. It would also mean saving taxpayers money and time by preventing costly and inconvenient runoffs.
A Ranked Choice Voting system would let voters rank up to five candidates in primary and special elections, starting in 2021. If voters still want to vote for just one candidate, they can.
So, how can you help bring Ranked Choice Voting to NYC?
Vote YES on 1—the first question on the ballot on November 5 (or beginning on October 26 if you’re voting early). That’s all it takes!
I've fought for democracy reforms at the federal level for years. This Tuesday, with your help, we have a chance to make our New York City elections fairer and more democratic.
Thanks for all you do,
Jerry
