John,
Right now, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders are fighting to fund a pilot postal banking program to help millions of Americans that are unbanked or underbanked access basic banking services at their local post office.
Please Join Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and DFA and take action to help make a banking system that works for working people.
Similar to the United States Postal Savings System that existed from 1911 to 1967, postal banking would provide basic banking services like deposits, while also helping put a stop to predatory fees and high-interest rates by offering even more essential banking services like small-dollar loans that could help eliminate the predatory payday loan market.
This program would lay down the groundwork needed to create a banking system that competes with corporate lenders and big banks charging outrageous fees.
Postal banking would also help rural areas like Itta Bena, Mississippi, where the only available ATM charges $7.50 to withdraw $20.
In fact, rural areas account for 90% of the zip codes without a single bank or credit union, and approximately 49% of African American households and 46% of Latino households are underbanked.
By establishing postal banking services, we can help over 14 million American adults that are unbanked while providing needed revenue to the USPS. Tell Congress: Fund Postal Banking Pilot Programs now.
