Liz Willen Dear reader,

During this fraught pandemic era, teachers are carrying a heavy load. Many are suffering their own personal tragedies, as are their students. And teachers often get blamed for everything from learning loss to discipline problems.

That’s why one of my favorite sections of The Hechinger Report is Teacher Voice ([link removed]) . Here’s a teacher demanding a larger voice in ed-tech decisions ([link removed]) , and one sharing how he learned to love ([link removed]) middle schoolers. A teacher describes how his students needed comforting ([link removed]) after the death of Chadwick Boseman, while others write about coping with student depression ([link removed]) and trauma. ([link removed]) There are bright spots too, like the teacher in a landlocked Mississippi town who is building a
scuba diving ([link removed]) program. Our mission of covering inequality and innovation in education is made stronger by the many teachers who contribute op-eds. ([link removed]) Teachers, we love to hear from you!

Also this week, we take a look at the potential chaos looming when student borrowers must begin repaying their loans ([link removed]) paused earlier in the pandemic, and drill into recent research on online ([link removed]) college classes. Thanks to all who read this newsletter, and all who have helped contribute to our membership campaign ([link removed]) !
