For half a century, ExxonMobil knew the truth about global warming. They lied to shareholders and policymakers. They funded climate-denial pseudoscience.
And now they're finally being held accountable for some of their crimes in what's being called the “climate trial of the century.”1 New York State has filed a $1.6 billion lawsuit against Exxon for lying to shareholders about the costs of climate change — and the case is generating a wave of negative press coverage of the oil industry.2
Just as the tobacco industry lied for decades about the adverse health effects of smoking, Exxon has lied about the catastrophic impact of runaway global warming and the role their company played in creating it.3
Between 2008 and 2017 alone, Exxon spent at least $1.4 billion for public relations and advertising firms to help them mislead the public and halt climate action.4
New York State's lawsuit could force Exxon to come clean with what they knew and when they knew it. It's generating long-overdue media attention on Exxon's dishonest behavior and creates an opportunity to convince Congress to strip away some of the ill-begotten gains Exxon has reaped from its decades of malicious misinformation.
The lawsuit has already generated a ton of negative press coverage for Exxon — and it could lead to even more if the company is forced to reveal internal documents and admit everything they knew.
