John,
This week, the House is scheduled to take up the Protecting Our Democracy Act. This is a big deal: the Protecting Our Democracy Act would strengthen transparency, close loopholes that threaten accountability and prevent future presidential abuses of power.
Not only would it require presidents and vice presidents to release 10 years of tax returns, but it would strengthen Hatch Act enforcement, protect whistleblowers and inspectors general, and prohibit presidential self-pardons—and that’s just scratching the surface.
Your representative needs to hear from you in support of this bill. Will you call them now at 202-224-3121 and let them know that you’re counting on them to support this bill?
Many of our ethics laws desperately need to be updated and strengthened in order to deal with the challenges our democracy is facing. The Protecting Our Democracy Act would give Congress better tools to do oversight of the executive branch, strengthen enforcement of the Emoluments Clauses, prevent political interference at the Department of Justice, and much more. Former President Trump may have exacerbated and exposed many of these weaknesses—but they existed long before his presidency, and continue to pose a threat, no matter who is in the White House.
Call your member of Congress now at 202-224-3121 and tell them: vote for the Protecting Our Democracy Act!
You can also help spread the word by sharing CREW’s tweet or Facebook post, or by forwarding this email. We need as many people as possible to speak up in support of this crucial legislation.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
