Dear Friends,
Two years ago, New Yorker James Pamphile, a client of the Rapid Defense Network, contacted IDP’s Pardon Project as a last resort.
James was facing mandatory deportation to Haiti for a conviction that was more than a decade old and for which he had already served his time. James would face grave danger in Haiti, where persecution against queer people was common and proper care for his multiple health issues is nonexistent.
A pardon from the governor was his last option for protection from deportation.
IDP’s Pardon Project reviewed James’ case and helped to secure him a pro bono attorney from the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County. Together with the Rapid Defense Network, the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County, and community advocates from Families for Freedom and the Southeast Asian Defense Network, we supported the #PardonJamesNow campaign. In August, James was pardoned by Governor Cuomo on one of his last days in office.
For countless other immigrants who face permanent exile from their loved ones because of the cruel and inflexible immigration system, a pardon can be a life-changing event. That’s why IDP has been fighting for years to expand pardons to keep families and communities together.
Can you pledge $100 today? Your generous support will help us win life-changing pardons for immigrants like James.
Thank you for standing with us in the fight for immigrants’ rights!
With love and solidarity,
The IDP Team
