Congress has made a massive investment in state education agencies and school districts to support them in preventing, preparing for, and responding to COVID-19. For LGBTQ+ students who were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic–and for those who found relief from discriminatory practices, such as being misgendered, in virtual learning–we must do better than return to a pre-pandemic normal.

To support state and local educators and advocates, GLSEN created a factsheet explaining how COVID-19 relief funds can be used to address challenges and ongoing impacts of the pandemic on LGBTQ+ young people. We also sent state education agency leaders a letter detailing our recommendations.

As states and school districts leverage federal funds to promote health and safety, they must consider the needs of LGBTQ+ students, particularly those who are transgender, nonbinary, Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), and people with disabilities. Reading and sharing these resources will move us one step closer to ensuring all LGBTQ+ young people have the supports they need to thrive and reach their full potential.
