Brand new community cafe launched in Wollaton!
cafe

A new community café was recently launched in Wollaton and it’s already very popular. Karen Thomson, manager at Wollaton Park Community Centre, explains:

“For the last 18 months the centre has been closed due to COVID restrictions. We have supported our most elderly and vulnerable residents throughout but it was such a lonely and isolating time for all ages we decided to start a community coffee shop, where new parents/carers could meet and compare ideas, where friends could congregate and relax, and where our isolated and vulnerable residents could enjoy a few hours in a warm and friendly environment. We have tried to make this a special morning for anyone that comes along. It has been a pleasure to be part of and we look forward to welcoming you all.”

Karen and her volunteers provide a lovely friendly and welcoming atmosphere, along with tea and coffee (and cakes!).

Why not drop in and see for yourself?

Every Thursday morning, 9am-12 noon, at Wollaton Park Community Centre, 15 Harrow Road NG8 1FG

Wollaton Park exhibition in Wollaton Library
photos

One of the consequences of the covid lockdown was a massively increased footfall into Wollaton Park. Many local people rediscovered the jewel in their back yard.

One of these people was Chris Denning who used his interest in photography to start to take some extraordinary shots in the park. Chris has now turned this into a brilliant exhibition that was held in Wollaton Library (hosted by the Wollaton Arts Festival).

Chris said: “I’d like to thank Alison, Paul, Jude and Val (the wonderful staff at Wollaton Library) and Rachael (Wollaton Arts) for helping make my first photography exhibition such a success. It’s a joy to have access to, and be able to feature, Wollaton Hall & Deer Park, where Kyle and his team do an amazing job at keeping it so perfect - thank you”

Part of the proceeds from the sales go to the Friends of Wollaton Park group who do such great work to assist in the upkeep and development of the park and hall. Their work in the Walled Garden in particular is outstanding and will pay dividends once we are able to secure funding for the major restoration that is needed to bring that part of the park back into public use. As local Cllrs we will continue to back the Friends group in any way we can.

Music to our ears!
music camp

*Wollaton West Councillors were delighted to award a grant to enable Nottingham Music Service to run day camps.*

Children from Middleton Primary School were able learn how to play music by ear, read music and learn ensemble skills that helped them play as part of a whole orchestra or ‘monster band’ at the end of the camp.

The camp took place in the beautiful rehearsal halls and grounds of the University of Nottingham’s Music Department.

Don't get caught out this Christmas

Nottingham City Council’s Trading Standards team are asking Nottingham residents to be careful when buying presents for children:

* *Look for the CE or UKCA mark:* These symbols on the label or box mean the manufacturer has assessed the toy for safety
* *Button-batteries can kill:*  Check they are screwed in firmly and safely before giving to a child
* *Check age restrictions:* Toys must be clearly marked with age restrictions - always follow them, they’re there for a reason

Christmas money tips

bills

*With increases in bills and the cost of living as well as taxes going up and continuing issues around the pandemic, this Christmas will be a tough one for many. *

Taking out payday or doorstep loans is a bad idea - they might seem like an easy way to get cash quickly, but you'll end up paying an arm and a leg due to sky-high interest rates.

The cheapest places to borrow money will always be a bank, building society or Notts and Lincs Credit Union  [ [link removed] ]- who may be able to help where others can't if you have a poor credit history.

⚠️ Scam warning ⚠️

Warning – criminals are using the NHS Covid Pass and pretending to be the NHS [ [link removed] ] as a way to *target the public by convincing them to hand over money, financial details and personal information.*

For information on how to get your *free* NHS COVID Pass, visit www.nhs.uk/nhscovidpass [ [link removed] ].

*On scams generally - remember, if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.* These include festive getaways at very low prices and ‘easy’ ways to make money, like cryptocurrency and investments. Take a moment to check Citizens Advice’s Online Scams Helper [ [link removed] ] to protect yourself.
