The global, open internet is core to a free and democratic society — but right now, its future is at stake. Around the world, we’ve witnessed efforts to shut down internet services and restrict people’s ability to express themselves freely and safely online, underscoring an overall global decline in internet freedom. The consequences of these attempts are far-reaching, touching human rights, economic growth and development, and more.
At the same time, leaders in democratic nations are struggling with how to effectively respond to challenges arising from online speech, including mis- and disinformation, hate speech, and harassment.
As leaders convene for President Biden’s Summit for Democracy, how should they navigate such issues? How can governments articulate a vision for a global, open internet grounded in democratic values and human rights?
Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 8, at 12:00 pm ET, the Center for Democracy & Technology will host a virtual panel to address these questions.
