John, it’s official → I’m running for Texas’ 28th Congressional district! Yesterday, I filed the paperwork to be on the 2022 Democratic primary ballot to unseat Henry Cuellar.
I was born and raised in the border town of Laredo, Texas. When my older sister needed urgent medical care that was only available in the United States, my parents took a leap of faith and immigrated here from Mexico to start a new life for our family.
My dad picked fruit and started his own trucking company to make ends meet and provide for our family. While growing up on the border, I saw firsthand that too many of the laws that are put into place don’t protect people who look like me and representation in Congress did very little to help families like mine.
Politicians always claim to fight for families like mine. In my case, it’s a little different because I’ve lived the experience that many in my community are currently facing. And that is why I have dedicated my career to giving back to my community, and why I am running for Congress.
This campaign that we’re building is powered by the people — NOT corporations and special interests, so I’m relying 100% on grassroots supporters like you to help lead us towards the finish line. Will you contribute to help me defeat Henry Cuellar and make history in South Texas?

I’m running because there are millions of families like mine — working-class and immigrant families — but so few people who look like us are in the halls of Congress.
I’ll admit — this race won’t be an easy one to win. In fact, it may be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But I’m confident that with your unwavering support, and with enough resources, we can get the job done.
We came within an inch of defeating Henry Cuellar last year, but this time, we’re in a better spot to come out on top. This race is winnable and it will take all of us to win.
With the right representation in Congress, we can achieve what those consider to be impossible like passing Medicare for All and ensuring economic justice for all Americans. So, if you can contribute today, that would be a big help as we approach the primary. Can I count on your support?
