A Librarian In Every School.

Seeing a problem, working together to find a solution, and getting the job done. That's how I've approached my job as your Ward 6 Councilmember. And in my first two terms, I'm proud of what we've accomplished. Here's just one example I'm working on right now: ensuring every DCPS school has a full-time librarian.

 

Thirty-six schools started the year without a librarian - 36! - with dozens of schools losing last year's. To hear the Chancellor say it, every principal makes their own staffing decisions. But I think they're having to make an impossible choice - either hire enough math and language teachers or a full-time librarian. And we know it's often schools with mostly Black and Brown students that are put in this difficult position. 

 

Earlier this summer, the Council had scrambled to pass a last-minute amendment to help fund librarians in this year's budget, but it's only a short-term fix. Let's stop making school communities fight for the basics and instead see librarians as the essential educators they are. This is about equity and putting the needs of our children first, and we have to do better. So I introduced legislation to require DCPS to fund a librarian in every school's budget, no matter what [Washington Informer: DCPS Librarians Support Legislation For Permanent Funding]. 

 

This is the type of leadership you can count on for Ward 6 and our city. And if you agree, I'd appreciate your support for our re-election campaign today.

 

As the proud son of a librarian, I know they're critical to improving reading comprehension, continuing learning outside of the classroom, and helping students discover a love of reading. Librarians change lives.

 

My bill hasn't even come up for a vote yet, but it's already having an impact. At a recent hearing, DCPS announced they've relented and will be funding a full-time librarian at every school next year.

 

This should be what we expect at every school in DC, for every child, and every year. This is just one example of my approach to public service.

I'm known for working closely with my colleagues on the Council, community organizations, and most importantly, school leaders and parents [WJLA: DCPS parents call for funding librarians in each school, 10 needed in schools]. Over my first two terms, we've worked tirelessly together to prioritize early childhood education and ensure every student has a great neighborhood school - and we've delivered. That means securing more than $600 million for Ward 6 school modernizations, creating the city's Books from Birth program, and demanding better inside the classroom, too, especially for those at-risk of falling further behind. 

 

As your Councilmember, I've provided strong leadership to get the job done, but there's so much more we can accomplish together. This Friday is the next fundraising report deadline.
