We need to talk about gerrymandering here in North Carolina.

Gerrymandering is what happens when the party in control of redistricting knows that they won’t win power on the issues — and when they’re more committed to maintaining that power than to heeding the will of the people.

Republicans in Raleigh drew new maps for our legislative and congressional districts that could grant them a supermajority in the legislature and 10 of our 14 seats in the House of Representatives.

That outcome simply wouldn’t reflect the political reality on the ground, team. Let us break it down:

In the 2020 elections, Democratic House candidates earned about 30,000 more votes overall than Republican candidates did — but only won 5 of 13 seats up for grabs.

Why’s that? Because Republicans consolidated their hold on power during the 2011 redistricting process.

The GOP found a strategy that works for them, and they’ve stuck with it. Thanks to their newly gerrymandered maps, 2022 could be even worse.
