John —
Today's an important anniversary. It marks 156 years since the states ratified the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery and involuntary servitude "within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
Slavery may have been officially outlawed on this day, but it didn't mark the end of our struggle.
The repercussions and reverberations of past injustices have led to inequalities in education, housing, health care, criminal justice policy, generational wealth, and policing practices. Countless public institutions remain deeply rooted in the continuing economic implications of slavery.
We can't forgive our nation's sins without confronting America's past. It's critical we confront the truth.
It's time Congress holds a comprehensive conversation about reparations for slavery and Jim Crow legal oppression. On today's anniversary, will you add your name next to mine if you support reparations for the descendants of people who were enslaved? » [link removed]
The idea of reparations is hard for some to talk about. It can be complicated and uncomfortable.
John, justice has never been secured from the safety of our comfort zones. We won't right the wrongs of the past by burying them.
I'm in Congress to make sure every single person is given a fair shot at the American Dream, and reparations are a step in that direction. If you agree we need reparations for the descendants of people who were enslaved, will you add your name next to mine? » [link removed]
