Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
This case marks the first time in 50 years that the Court is hearing a case directly jeopardizing the bedrock, landmark decision that is Roe v. Wade. It’s the greatest threat to abortion and reproductive rights that we have ever seen.
Let’s be perfectly clear: It is women, Black, Indigenous and other people of color, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, young people, the poor, and people with disabilities who are most harmed by abortion restrictions and bans. And with a 6-3 right-wing majority on the Court, we cannot sit back and await the ruling we can already be sure is coming.
We must act immediately — and that includes abolishing the filibuster, passing federal legislation guaranteeing the right to abortion care and reproductive freedom, and ultimately expanding the Supreme Court.
As it stands, the fate of our constitutional rights has been left to a Supreme Court with a stolen far-right majority, unafraid to weaponize their power for political gain.
Whether it’s reproductive freedom and health care, voting rights, climate action, immigration reform — the list goes on — we cannot stand idly by as a dangerously partisan Court dismantles our democracy piece by piece.
We’re already seeing what lengths Republicans across the country are willing to go to to do exactly that. It’s time for our Democratic majority to wield the power the American people elected us to use and fight back.
The solution may be simple, but it will not be easy. It will take all 50 Democratic votes in the Senate to abolish the filibuster, and that’s just the first step. The honest truth is that our progressive movement must stand united on these issues, so I’m asking you directly:
It’s time we have a government that reflects the people it’s meant to serve and represent. The time to act is now.
Thank you for being a part of our fight.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
