Hello — Today's the anniversary of the state ratification of the 13th Amendment, which outlawed slavery in the United States or any place subject to its jurisdiction.
This is our Independence Day, team. But it wasn't the end of our struggle. As a response to the end of slavery, politicians passed racist and discriminatory voting laws to block our ancestors from making our voices heard in elections.
One century later, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 at last outlawed discrimination in voting until 2013, when the Supreme Court rolled back key provisions of the law. To fight back, the late Congressman John Lewis introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to expand access to the ballot box and restore the integrity of the VRA.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act passed the House for the first time on this day in 2019. It stalled in the Senate, and the House passed it again this August.
Team, we need the Senate to restore the VRA and expand voting rights immediately. Will you sign our petition demanding the Senate pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act now?
Because there aren't federal protections for Black voters, 19 states have enacted 33 laws that will make it harder for Americans to vote this year alone.
Our voting rights shouldn't come down to the whims of state lawmakers or the Supreme Court. The right to vote should be guaranteed and protected. We need the John Lewis Voting Rights Act -- our democracy depends on it.
