Trigger Warning: White supremacist violence, Islamophobia, violence, disturbing/threatening language
John,
It’s no secret that there are still white supremacists in Congress -- directly threatening the safety and wellbeing of our Black and brown representatives. One of these people is Lauren Boebert.
Throughout her time in Congress, Lauren Boebert has spewed racist rhetoric, and in recent weeks, a disgusting amount of Islamophobia against Representative Ilhan Omar, including calling her a member of the “jihad squad” and juxtaposing her with someone carrying a bomb.
Last week, Rep. Omar shared a recent threat via voicemail on her phone, in which the anonymous voice states “There’s plenty that will love the opportunity to take you off the face of this fucking earth.”
It’s abundantly clear that Boebert’s Islamophobia has real consequences that directly threaten Muslims everywhere, and the Republican party must take this seriously. If they don’t, white supremacist violence will continue to thrive in Congress and throughout the entire country.
The House Minority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, must take swift action to hold Boebert accountable. Islamophobic rhetoric is not just blatantly wrong: It’s a direct call for action to white supremacists, which we’re seeing occur in real time. That’s why we’re flooding McCarthy’s Twitter -- click here to demand Kevin McCarthy hold Boebert accountable immediately.
Next month will mark the one year anniversary of the attempted coup by white supremacists at our nation’s Capitol.
Make no mistake: The events that transpired that day were a direct result of white supremacy in political leadership, and the lack of accountability thereof.
When Republicans don’t hold white supremacy within their party accountable, we end up with leaders like Donald Trump. We end up with leaders like Sen. Ted Cruz, like Sen. Mitch McConnell, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Rep. Lauren Boebert.
When Republicans don’t hold white supremacists within their party accountable, we end up with attempted coups and death threats.
Accountability would set a precedent for combating white supremacy in politics, and it’s something that is long overdue. If McCarthy doesn’t take swift action to hold Lauren Boebert accountable, he’ll make it abundantly clear that he is committed to upholding white supremacy, not the people he represents. Now’s his chance: Click here to tweet him.
We’re sending love and support to Representative Omar at this time. We will remain in solidarity and continue to fight for accountability to prevent Islamophobia and white supremacy from thriving.
In love and solidarity,
