Dear John:

December has gotten off to a robust start, with more PFLAG Connects: Communities meetings, World AIDS Day remembrances, and a critical reproductive healthcare rights case at the Supreme Court. However you've shown up and connected, we hope you're also taking time to connect with and care for yourself.

This week, we especially want to highlight our upcoming episode of Something to Talk About Live, where we'll be talking about the issue of LGBTQ+ and other book bans that we are seeing in hundreds of communities across the country. Our guests this week are on the frontlines of this issue, including Gender Queer author/illustrator Maia Kobabe, Last Night at the Telegraph Club author Malinda Lo, and Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. This is one you won't want to miss--and that you'll want to share with your friends and family!

Three Steps to Being a Better Human Rights Advocate

Human Rights Day is on December 10th. Take a look at some of these resources to learn how to be a better advocate for human rights.

  1. Learn: Head to the United Nations website to learn about Human Rights Day and this year’s focus on equality. Visit PFLAG’s website on advocacy to learn about some of the ways that you can use your voice to advocate for others and their rights.
  2. Watch: Revisit our PFLAG Academy Online sessions for LGBTQ+ History to learn how our community’s past intersects with human rights efforts today. Watch some episodes of Something To Talk About Live! that address international human rights issues, including this episode about anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in Hungary.
  3. Share: Consider sharing Human Rights Day materials across social media, using hashtags #StandUp4HumanRights and #HumanRightsDay. Stay connected to PFLAG on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Have you enrolled for healthcare coverage yet? It's time to #GetCovered!

Looking for health insurance for 2022 through HealthCare.gov? Our friends at Out2Enroll have got you covered! They reviewed more than 3,748 silver marketplace plan options in 33 states and found that 1) the vast majority of insurers did not use transgender-specific exclusions and 2) more than half (51%) of plans had language indicating that all or some medically necessary transition-related care would be covered by the plan.

To help you understand your options, Out2Enroll has created new state-specific Transgender Health Insurance Guides and encourage you to make an appointment with an LGBTQ-friendly expert who can help you enroll for free.

You can see more detailed information for each plan by checking your state’s materials here, and a summary of all reviewed plans is available here.

We are excited to welcome Maia Kobabe, author of Gender Queer: A Memoir (2020 ALA Alex Award Winner); Malinda Lo, author of Last Night at the Telegraph Club (Winner, National Book Awards 2021 for Young People's Literature); and Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom to the conversation this week.
