This is horrifying, morally reprehensible, and incredibly dangerous.
Last week my colleague and sister-in-service, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, was subjected to blatant, bigoted Islamophobic attacks from our Republican “colleague” and insurrectionist Lauren Boebert — who called Ilhan a member of “jihad squad” and insinuated that all Muslims are terrorists.
This is not the first time Ilhan has faced Islamophobia inside or outside the Capitol, but we have to call out the incredible danger these comments pose. After Boebert’s comments, Ilhan shared audio of a recent, violent death threat she received that echoed Boebert’s bigotry and hatred.
From Islamophobia to sexism to an attack on our very Capitol, the Republican Party continues to accept and condone violence and hatred directed at their elected colleagues and the American people.
Enough is enough. In Ilhan’s words, “condemning this should not be a partisan issue. This is about our basic humanity, and the fundamental right to religion enshrined in our constitution.”
Words have consequences and there must be accountability. Their hatred is no match for our movement.
