[[link removed]]Hi John,
This past September marked 20 years since 9/11 and the beginning of the War on Terror. As a Black Muslimah who grew up in the Bronx, this past year I’ve been reflecting on how deeply the War on Terror and state-sanctioned violence has shaped my experiences and affected our communities.
This is why I am so excited to moderate a conversation with Dr. Maha Hilal, Vanessa Taylor, and Munira Lokhandwala about how the Global War on Terror shows up in our daily lives and how we can bring it to an end.
On Wednesday, PowerSwitch Action and ACRE are hosting a talk with Dr. Maha Hilal on her new book, Innocent Until Proven Muslim: Islamophobia, the War on Terror, and the Muslim Experience Since 9/11 . Dr. Hilal describes how institutionalized Islamophobia has justified the War on Terror, the impact on Muslim Americans — and how we push back.
I hope you can join us on Wednesday, December 8th at 2pm ET/11am PT — register here to get the link. [[link removed]]
[link removed] [[link removed]]At PowerSwitch Action, we see every day how the War on Terror harms our communities and undermines our democracy. Tech corporations have turned surveillance tools they built to profit off defense contracts against people organizing at work. Militarized police departments drain city coffers, while neighborhoods lack basic services that truly keep us safe. Through the Athena coalition and our people-powered budgets campaign, we’re organizing to rein in corporate power and use our public resources for the things we actually need.
Dr. Hilal will share insights from her work and join a powerhouse group of organizers and thought leaders in a conversation about how government, corporate, and political forces drive the War on Terror and Islamophobia, the impact on Muslims and other communities of color, and the organizing we are doing and need more of to abolish the War on Terror.
We are also excited to have Vanessa Taylor (a freelance reporter focusing on Black Muslims and technology) and Munira Lokhandwala (a program manager with the Public Accountability Initiative/Little Sis) on our panel to share their expertise and insight. You don’t want to miss it!
RSVP here — I can’t wait to see you there. [[link removed]]
