John,
We have lived through a tragic week in Michigan history. On Tuesday, four young lives were cut short by a horrific act of violence, and that is tragic, and traumatizing -- even if you aren’t a member of the Oxford community.
These last few days have been some of the hardest we have faced in recent memory, and we have all been through a lot together. Michiganders are tough, but right now, our hearts are broken.
This week, we lost four beautiful young souls. Others are in the hospital. And thousands have been touched in Michigan and across the country.
One thing is very clear: We have to come together to protect our kids. They should be worrying about the math test next week or looking forward to a holiday break, not finding where the closest exit is in every room they enter or figuring out what to say in their final phone call to their mom.
We have to come together to help incredible teachers focus on empowering and teaching our kids, not perfecting emergency procedures.
We have to come together for every parent so they can think about where their kid is going to college, not whether they’re coming home.
We have to come together as Michiganders and as Americans. For Hana. For Tate. For Madisyn. For Justin. For all of you.
We will never stop fighting to make our schools safe and build the kind of state where everyone can feel safe, no matter where we are.
We will lean on each other — we will mourn Hana and Tate and Madisyn and Justin. We’ll honor their memory through our prayers and our actions.
We will get through this together. It’s the only way we ever have.
