Team,
Tonight, I spoke on one of the biggest stages in politics — the Iowa Democratic Party’s Liberty and Justice Celebration.
I shared my vision for driving opportunity for every single American.
It’s an agenda that invests in our kids, can unite Democrats, and can win back the nine million people who voted twice for Barack Obama and then for Donald Trump.
Will it be hard? Yes.
But we’ve been here before in our history.
The people we call the founders did two incredible things: They fought and won the Revolution, and they wrote a Constitution that we still live under today. Neither of those things had ever happened before.
They also did something terrible. They perpetuated human slavery.
It took other Americans to change that and to bring us closer once again to our founding ideals.
People like Frederick Douglass and the women who fought so my daughters and women across the country would have the right to vote. They are founders, too.
And that is the same role we all must occupy today.
That's what it means to be a citizen in a republic.
When we have a president who doesn't believe in the rule of law, freedom of the press, separation of powers, or democracy, then we have our work cut out for us. That's what is at stake.
It’s up to all of us to save this democracy as founders once again.
I hope you’ll join me. |
