The mission of Second Chance Center, Inc. is to help formerly incarcerated people transition to lives of success and fulfillment. SCC was founded in 2012 by Hassan Latif who had been released from prison in 2006 and vowed he was never going back! After 18 years of incarceration witnessing the cycle of recidivism, and with his post-prison training in addiction and behavioral change counseling, Hassan insisted that changes in the approach to transitioning post-release were essential if outcomes were to improve. His “Never Going Back: 7 Steps to Staying Out of Prison” forms the core of SCC’s approach to addressing the needs of people leaving prison. It is based on lived experience combined with proven clinical theories and models of behavior, made accessible with conversational language and real-life examples.
Today, with a staff of 47, SCC continues to provide client support in housing, transportation, basic needs, mental health care, substance use disorder treatment, resources, skills base training and employment assistance.
Second Chance Center is the largest and most effective re-entry program in Colorado, maintaining a recidivism rate under 10% (compared to 47% statewide). Even with the stressors of COVID we served over 2000 formerly incarcerated people. In December 2020, we achieved the long-term goal of purchasing our own facility.
Our new home at 224 Potomac in Aurora has 13,652 sq ft of space on two floors. It has private offices where care managers can meet privately with clients, a wonderful industrial kitchen we plan to convert to a commercial kitchen providing the opportunity to continue to serve clients hot breakfast and lunch daily as well as provide space for culinary training in partnership with Work Options. There is a beautiful light-filled space for group mentoring and community events, meeting rooms, and a donation-based client clothing closet. The second floor features the newly designed Impact 100 Employment Opportunity Lab that plays host to pre-apprenticeship programming and employment training, additional Care management office space, meeting space, and a mental and behavioral health office
As we approach our 10th year of operation, we want the community to know that Second Chance Center is here to stay. We ask for your support of our $2.5M capital campaign. We believe that investing in our new home is an investment in the future of our communities.
