John,

The Russian town of Norilsk is in Siberia, 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The northernmost town in the world is now one of the Earth’s most polluted places.

Residents of Norilsk describe the town as “a trash heap for our children” because of one business: Norilsk Nickel. The company is the world’s biggest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel, along with platinum, cobalt, and copper.

This should be an immense concern to the rest of the planet, because as one researcher put it, “what happens in the Arctic, doesn’t stay in the Arctic”.

A recent study found that within a few decades, the Arctic might rain more than it snows . That level of climate disturbance will have major repercussions for the entire globe.

Meanwhile, Norilsk Nickel is still up their polluting like nothing is amiss. The company’s wastewater has turned glacial rivers red, and the acrid smoke from its industrial stacks is considered the worst sulfur dioxide pollution anywhere in the world.

While the company is pledging to spend $4 billion on pollution control and restoring the local environment, Russia and Putin’s government are dragging their feet, as seen by their lackluster participation in the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

John, SEEC members know tackling climate change is a global effort, and U.S. leadership is needed in order to hold countries like Russia to task, or we’ll all pay the price. That’s why our members are stepping up and driving climate action in Congress.

We must let them know we’re standing with them. Will you show your support for our SEEC members with a donation? [[link removed]]

SEEC members are working to restore American leadership on climate change after four years of being missing in action.

Thank you for being a crucial part of this effort.
