This week, I continued my fight to stop sanctuary cities once and for all. Watch a video of my work here:
I introduced new legislation that would clarify DHS's detainer authority and eliminate the excuse some local jurisdictions are using to justify why they ignore detainer requests made by DHS and release dangerous criminals.
This week, the Buncombe County Sheriff released an individual charged with multiple counts of statutory sex offenses with a child despite a detainer request from ICE to transfer his custody prior to his release. Below is my statement on the release:
This is unacceptable. WBTV reported data last month detailing that nearly 500 illegal immigrants were released from North Carolina jails over the last 10 months after being charged with crimes like sex offenses, kidnapping, arson and homicide. The illegal immigrants were released from jail after local sheriffs refused to comply with detainer requests made by ICE.
This new legislation is a follow up to the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act, legislation I introduced that holds sanctuary jurisdictions accountable for failing to comply with lawful detainer and release notification requests made by federal authorities. I will continue to fight the reckless policies and keep our communities safe.
I recently co-introduced legislation to make schools safer by detailing the best practices for school security. One thing we can all agree on is we must do everything we can to make sure our children are safe at school, and this legislation would help achieve that goal.
I also attended a bipartisan meeting at the White House with VA Secretary Robert Wilkie to discuss combatting veteran suicide. In August, I toured Eastern North Carolina with Secretary Wilkie and visited the Wilmington VA Clinic.
Lastly, I was proud to invite Pastor Andrew Brunson to deliver the opening prayer in the U.S. Senate to commemorate the one-year anniversary of his release from Turkish custody. Watch video of his visit here:
Thank you for reading my e-newsletter, I will continue to work hard to represent all North Carolinians in the Senate and deliver results. If you or someone you know is having trouble with the VA or any federal agency, please don't hesitate to contact my office.
All the best,
