Dear friend of OpenSecrets,
Online disinformation: It's one of the most disturbing problems affecting our elections. It’s designed to manipulate voters, can suppress voter turnout, and it’s cheap, making it easy to deliver the misleading half-truths — or bald-faced lies — that fuel propaganda.
So how do you know whether the information you are getting from supposedly trusted sources is being distorted, and by whom?
For over three decades, the Center for Responsive Politics has made a fundamental commitment to produce and disseminate peerless data and analysis on money in politics. We inform and engage Americans, champion transparency, and expose disproportionate or undue influence on public policy. In other words, when money talks, OpenSecrets.org is here to translate.
- More than $90 million has already been spent on digital ads by 2020 presidential candidates.
- President Trump's 2020 re-election campaign has raised over $246 million from direct and outside spending sources, an unprecedented sum for a sitting president at this stage.
- Total combined fundraising by presidential candidates and by super PACs supporting their campaigns for the upcoming 2020 election has exceeded $684 million. And millions more have been raised for congressional races for the House and Senate.
OpenSecrets.org is the most comprehensive resource for federal campaign, lobbying and conflict of interest data and analysis available — for everyone. In addition to our original reporting, we collaborate daily with news organizations large and small, and nonprofits that work on the issues you care about, to help power their reporting and investigations that keep you informed. Our efforts, and the efforts of all non-profit news outlets, promote a free and effective press, and restore trust in democracy.
That’s why we’re proud to be participating for the 4th year in NewsMatch, the largest grassroots campaign for nonprofit news. This annual matching-gift challenge helps organizations like ours to engage more citizens and raise funds before the year ends, so that we can focus on keeping our democratic system transparent, accessible, and accountable. Here’s how it works:
Beginning today, November 1, through December 31st, NewsMatch will match each contribution up to $1,000 that we receive. The match allows us to raise an additional $40,000 through the end of the year to add muscle to our election coverage in 2020.
Please consider making a contribution and help sustain OpenSecrets.org during this critical time.
