Naquetta Ricks was 13 years old when her family was suddenly caught up in Liberia's 1980 military coup. After being forced to watch as her mother was interrogated at gunpoint, Ricks and her family fled to the U.S. to seek political asylum. But when they arrived, they had no lawyer to help prove their case.

For Ricks, this harrowing experience planted the seeds of running for elected office to advocate for individuals in need of a voice. Now she is proudly serving as the first Black immigrant elected to the Colorado House of Representatives – in one of the most diverse districts in the state.

“I care about all of my community… We do have the same needs, whether it’s education, health care ... financial opportunities, jobs, small business. We all want a place that's functioning, where we can all thrive and grow.”
– Naquetta Ricks

Ricks has sponsored key legislation establishing a legal fund to help low-income immigrants to prove their cases in court. As Kabongo Serge-Patrick, a Congolese chef and one of Ricks’s early supporters, says: "Now we [as African immigrants] have a voice to see how we can prosper here in America.” And Ricks continues to support policies that provide a firm foundation for vulnerable populations – enhancing economic protection and prosperity for the entire district.

Team Emerge is proud to have such phenomenal women leaders in our sisterhood – making history, breaking barriers, and creating better opportunities for all. Will you donate now to help recruit, train, and elect MORE Democratic women up and down the ballot, in every state?

Emerge is a national organization working to recruit, train, and get Democratic women elected across the country, and we are so grateful to have you on our team. Our alums are strong voices for Democratic values — and they are running up and down the ballot to fight for working families. They are fighting for critical issues that affect our communities, such as the environment, accessible and affordable health care, social justice, and education equity. We need more alums fighting for us across the country.

You may notice that we send a lot of emails asking for your support — that’s because we win when everyone does what they can to help. Our organization depends on thousands of actual people who care about our democracy and want to see positive change in our communities and across our country by building power through investing in Democratic women. If you’d like to donate, click here.
