Calls to ban books from libraries and burn them in the streets. A gnawing pandemic that continues to divide communities and spawn disinformation. The silencing of writers, artists, and athletes in Cuba, China, Myanmar, and Belarus.

It's been a year shaped, perhaps, by conflict. But as a writer, I believe conflict is a prerequisite for transformation. ([link removed])

Today is Giving Tuesday, and I am asking you to be as generous as possible ([link removed]) . If we want to transform, we can't relent amid all these conflicts. PEN America has doubled down on its efforts to protect and defend imprisoned writers; we've partnered with students and teachers to defend the freedom to read; we've gotten the attention of the White House and members of Congress to call out in defense of imperiled dissidents globally.
