Dear People For Supporter, If you're a follower of our Right Wing Watch project, you're probably familiar with the antics of Representative Lauren Boebert, the Colorado Republican who's become infamous for her far-right conspiracy mongering on multiple topics. Over the recent Thanksgiving break, a video went viral of Rep. Boebert spewing bigoted and Islamophobic remarks about Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar. In the video, Boebert shared the story of an alleged encounter she had in an elevator with Rep. Omar. Boebert claims she told her staffer, "Well, she doesn't have a backpack. We should be fine." The statement was made in reference to the harmful and blatantly Islamophobic trope of explosives in a backpack. Boebert also refers to Omar as being a part of the “Jihad Squad” twice in the video. The so-called encounter in the elevator, which Rep. Omar has noted is completely made up, garnered applause and laughter from the audience during Boebert's speech. But the disgusting and dangerous vitriol is all too real. Since this incident, Rep. Boebert has flatly refused to apologize to Rep. Omar – and Rep. Omar is now receiving death threats, one of which she recently played at a news conference. Congress has a fundamental responsibility to prove to the world that bigotry and Islamophobia have no place in our democracy. This incident is just one part of a toxic, hate-filled culture from far-right members of Congress that is aided and abetted by the complete lack of any pushback or rebuttal from Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, or for that matter any other prominent Republican leader. Thank you in advance for speaking out and taking action. – Will E. & the Digital Team at People For
