Folks,
I wanted to take a moment to wish all those who celebrate a Happy Hanukkah.
Often referred to as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah generally falls on the darkest days of the year, and teaches us about the spirit of survival and the power of miracles.
The light in Hanukkah is often used as a metaphor for illuminating the darkness in tough times. While this remains historically accurate during the celebration of Hanukkah, it’s also relevant for many people today given political tension, COVID-19 isolation, and the presence of anti-semitism. The light in Hanukkah represents unity and solidarity against the world’s brutality.
With history in mind and more recent, violent, anti-semtic attacks that have occured in the United States and globally, the meaning of Hanukkah is open to different interpretations for many who celebrate. But the light still exists as a symbol for hope and better times to come.
Where we see division, we must call upon love. Where we see cruelty, we must denounce it. As I have joined many family friends over the years as they celebrated Hanukkah, this year's holiday carries a special meaning and calls on all of us to continue to work to guarantee freedom of religious expression without fear of violence or hate.
I hope you enjoy this year’s Hanukkah.
Thinking of you all,
Haley
