Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and I aren’t staying silent in the face of the anti-Muslim attacks from the far-right wing of Congress — not now and not ever.

Let’s be clear: We may have seen an uptick in attacks in recent days, but this is far from the first time we’ve faced Islamophobia as members of Congress.

We’ve received death threats since the beginning, and before she was elected, one of our far-right colleagues tried to chase us down in the halls of Congress to force us to retake our oaths of office on the Bible instead of the Quran — falsely claiming it was the law.

Rashida and I won our elections twice and serve in Congress despite the obstacles stacked against us. We are honored to fight for bold, progressive change on behalf of our districts. But it’s unacceptable that we face Islamophobia, threats, and intimidation every single day.

That’s why we’re fighting to reject hate and build a country that lifts up everyone. We’ve brought forward legislation to take concrete steps to combat Islamophobia and remove barriers that women, especially women of color, face when it comes to participating in politics.
