It is hard to believe December is already upon us. We have done so much this year to serve hardworking families in our community and across the country—from the American Rescue Plan to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

As we approach the end of the year, I'll be working to keep our government funded, pay our existing debts, and move the historic Build Back Better Act across the finish line.

Last week, I joined Labor Community Services, LA County Federation of Labor, Karsh Center, Bresee Foundation, Clínica Romero, Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club, Midnight Mission and Ed Begley, Jr. in helping to provide turkeys and Thanksgiving meals to our friends and neighbors facing food insecurity.

Among the many community service events that I have the pleasure of participating in throughout the year, these Thanksgiving turkey drives are some of my favorites. I’d like to give a special shoutout to all of the volunteers, organizations, and sponsors who helped make this year’s distributions successful!

Last month, I voted to pass the largest investment in working families since the New Deal. The historic Build Back Better Act will touch the lives of every single American and would cut the costs of health care, child care, prescription drugs, & housing—all while creating millions of good-paying union jobs.

Several priorities I fought for on the Ways and Means Committee have made it into the House bill. These provisions will promote the development of new affordable housing, establish a paid family and medical leave program, extend the enhanced Child Tax Credit and restore eligibility for immigrant children, and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. BIG NEWS: The American Rescue Plan will provide $98,757,695 to support children & youth experiencing homelessness in California.

These critical funds will help identify students experiencing homelessness and connect them with resources so they can thrive in the classroom and fully participate in school activities.

I'm proud to announce that the Los Angeles County Office will receive approximately $3.1 million and Los Angeles Unified School District will receive $883,000!

When MSNBC's José Díaz-Balart asked what the American dream meant to me, I replied that it is my life story—that a son of a bracero, a farmworker, can end up in Congress.

But for far too long, the American dream has been out of reach for working families and communities of color. By passing the Build Back Better Act earlier this month, House Democrats renewed the American dream for an entire generation and took a large step toward building a more just, equitable and perfect union for all. 

As we continue to learn more about the new Omicron variant, one thing remains clear to public health experts: Becoming fully vaccinated—and getting your booster shot—and boosted is still the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

If you are 18 or over, you are eligible for a COVID-19 booster if either six months have passed since your second dose of Pfizer or Moderna, or two months have passed since your Johnson & Johnson dose.
