What Is Your Top Priority?

First, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for joining me as I kicked off my congressional campaign at the end of September. As you know, one year ago, during November 2018, together, we brought our district closer to victory than we've been in years! We are going to continue building on that progress, win the primary, and get Tom Emmer a one-way ticket back to Minnesota.

We know that Rep. Emmer is not spending his time in Washington fighting for the needs of working families in Minnesota. Instead, he is spending his time defending Donald Trump. And that’s not what we need in our member of Congress! 

We need someone who will work for you everyday, fighting for you! That’s why I’m running. And I’m so encouraged by the fact that all of you believe I can make a positive change.

From health care, to the environment, to merely ensuring Congress performs its essential oversight duties that are required by the Constitution, there is no shortage of issues facing Minnesota and the United States.

Let’s Put People Over Big Pharma
Legislation in the U.S. House is moving closer to a vote that would allow the government to negotiate to reduce the cost of life-savings prescription drugs -- for the first time.  We have been fighting for the ability negotiate drug prices for years!

While this legislation could be much stronger, it is a good first step. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates savings of $345 billion for Medicare over seven years. But that’s not all, there would be $158 billion in household savings because of lower insurance premiums and lower prescription co-pays.  

Together, we are going to end the business model that puts pharmaceutical industry profits over the health and safety of people in Minnesota. Together, we are going to fight to put people over Big Pharma.

Fighting for a Renewable
Energy Future
I was delighted to attend a public hearing in St. Cloud in late October about Xcel Energy's plan to produce 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050. I’m glad Xcel Energy has a plan to completely eliminate carbon emissions. However, 30 years is too long to wait. 

Also, I don't believe the zero emission plan is actually an environmental plan. I believe that it is an economic plan. Xcel sees the writing on the wall. 

Clearly, renewable energy is becoming cheaper and cheaper everyday, and it has already surpassed many forms of energy production. This trend will only continue. 

The only reason, for example, a fracked gas power plant is economically feasible has everything to do with massive subsidies still being pumped into the fossil fuel industry. If those subsidies would end, I cannot believe it would take 30 years to turn our energy economy around. Think of it this way: If these massive subsidies were, instead, granted to renewable energy -- and not fossil fuels -- how quickly do you think the entire country would switch to zero emissions? 

I bet it'd be earlier than 2050.

A Responsibility Rep. Emmer
Doesn’t Understand
Congressman Emmer recently said Democrats have an “obsession with their hatred" for Donald Trump. What Congressman Emmer is failing to understand is Democrats have launched an impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives not because of "their hatred" for the president, but because of their responsibility to follow the U.S. Constitution. Whether members of Congress like or dislike the president is beside the point. 

Congress is a co-equal branch of government. To serve in Congress -- and represent the people of Minnesota well -- you must understand that you have a Constitutional responsibility to pursue the facts and hold the president accountable. Impeaching a president isn’t something I take lightly. But it is of the utmost importance that we follow the U.S. Constitution and support the rule of law. One of the bedrocks of our democracy is that no one is above the law. We cannot set the precedent that we don’t hold our leaders accountable.
 
LASTLY, A WELCOME TO TAWNJA: I wanted to take a moment to welcome Tawnja Zahradka to the race to unseat Tom Emmer. Having more candidates enter the race is healthy for our democracy -- and is a strong signal that our congressional district has the potential to flip blue.
