Hi John,
Voting is the foundational right to all other rights. But Big Lie Republicans have been doing their very best to pass laws restricting the right to vote of folks they don’t think will support them.
Republican legislators around the country have been passing laws to target people of color and young people from voting. The Department of Justice just filed a lawsuit in Texas to stop the implementation of a new law that will target voters with disabilities, members of the military, elderly voters, and voters with limited English proficiency.
There’s been a lot of chatter in Washington about all the pieces of legislation that need to pass in December. Raising the debt ceiling, a new budget, defense spending renewal. But voting rights reform doesn’t appear to be on the list.
Republicans have been unwilling to negotiate with Democrats who have offered to consider their amendments. If they won’t even accept a compromise bill, imagine what they will do to voting rights if they take control of Congress next year and elect Donald Trump to be Speaker of the House?
Thanks for being part of this work,
Hank Johnson
