I’m a first generation Greek-American and my family is incredibly conservative and close-minded to who I am. I’m a high school chorus music teacher and the Gay/Straight Alliance advisor. It’s a small town and my students tell me that my being the school’s first out teacher empowers them to feel seen and free to be themselves. I’m grateful for the successful life I’ve made for myself, but it’s unfortunate I’m not able to share it with my own family. Often, I tell my students that a “chosen family” can be just as important as they grow up.

Part of my chosen family is the amazing people I’ve met through The Center’s Cycle for the Cause, the Northeast AIDS Ride. It’s been transformational for me. Through the Ride, I’ve learned so much about my community, the role I play in it and my responsibility to be an example for my students. The Center has given me the hope to make a better world. Even though we’re going through tough times right now, a beacon of light will forever resonate from The Center. Its existence―simply being there and supporting people virtually―provides comfort for so many.

Make A Holiday Gift

I arranged a field trip for my students to visit The Center because I wanted them to see what it’s like to find “your people” and to realize that what they may think are problems can in fact be their greatest strengths. But then New York shut down for the pandemic. Even though I haven’t yet been able to introduce my students physically to the building, because of the strength The Center has given me, I’m able to bring my whole self to the virtual classroom every day. I teach my students that courage and bravery are required in order to be your happiest―and having a place like The Center helps me persevere.

With gratitude,

Ilias
