Dear Friends,

Thanksgiving has come and gone, but we are still in the spirit of giving thanks and we could not be more thankful for your continued support this past #GivingTuesday. So many of you gave donations, purchased our Hunger Fighter apparel or shared our GivingTuesday campaign with your friends and family. Your support helped us exceed our goal, raising close to $10,000 to help us continue our work together to end hunger. Thank you!

Food Pantry & Soup Kitchens

For the month of November, our Victory in Partnership (VIP) Food Rescue Team was able to provide 9000 pounds of extra food and water to 1950 individuals in 673 households. Thanks to the food pantry and soup kitchen volunteers who donate their time and transportation each week to make this happen!

Does your food pantry or soup kitchen want to join the waiting list? Contact Derek Felton at [email protected].

Policy and Advocacy

Two good news items on the SNAP front:

  1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved Pennsylvania’s request to issue SNAP Emergency Allotments (EAs) in December. To find out more, including payment dates, please see our EA flyer for December.
  2. The USDA has approved Pennsylvania’s request for a statewide waiver of the SNAP time limit for “Able-bodied Adults without Dependents” (ABAWDs) rule for fiscal year 2022 (covering Oct. 1, 2021-Sept. 30, 2022). If you remember this horrible rule, adults aged 18-49 who do not have minor children in their SNAP household can only receive SNAP for three months if they do not meet specified work, training or volunteer requirements or qualify for a limited number of exemptions. States can apply to waive this rule by providing evidence of high unemployment and/or an insufficient number of jobs, which PA has done.

2021 Winter Break Meals

Food prices are on the rise due to inflation, the pandemic and food supply shortages, hurting food banks here in Philadelphia and making it even harder for low income families to purchase the food they need. With the holidays upon us and the 2021 winter break coming soon, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is finding ways to help. They will be offering free youth meals on select days during the 2021 winter break, as well as the 2022 spring break, to help families in need of meals for their children when schools are closed. See this press release for a list of locations and dates, or use this city map that lists student meals sites.
